Nursery

At Ashover nursery, we believe that children learn best from a range of experiences and through play. The Early Years are a very important part of your children’s learning journey and for most of the children nursery will be their first setting. We work very closely with parents as you know your child the best and we want them to feel happy, safe and secure in our environment. We aim to promote independence for the children so that they can begin to get themselves ready for school.

In the Early Years, nursery children will explore the 7 areas of learning and development which include 3 prime areas.

These are:

1. Communication & Language (prime area)

2. Physical Development (prime area)

3. Personal, Social, Emotional Development (prime area)

4. Literacy

5. Maths

6. Understanding the World

7. Expressive Arts & Design

Our curriculum is topic led as we want the children to learn key knowledge and skills through a range of experiences and activities. Our curriculum is also flexible so that we can incorporate the children’s interests as we get to know them. Nursery will take part in short taught sessions each day such as phonics, maths, squiggle while you wiggle, and dough disco. We also have a hall slot once a week for PE sessions which will run alongside our physical development activities.

A newsletter will also be sent out at the beginning of each term so that you can see what nursery will be learning about as the term starts and how you can get involved at home if you wish to do so.

Nursery Topics

Autumn 1

Magical Me

For our first topic, it is important to get the know all the children, who is in their family and their likes / dislikes. It is a nice way to settle the children in as they begin to form key relationships within the setting.

Autumn 2

Let’s Celebrate

In this half term we will celebrate Bonfire Night, Remembrance Day and of course the countdown to Christmas which will include our Christmas Play! As we are looking at celebrations we will be discussing special occasions such as birthdays and weddings.

Spring 1

Out of this World

In this topic, nursery will be focusing on superheroes and thinking about the people in our community who may help us. Who is a superhero to you?

Spring 2

Let’s go Outside

Our outdoor topic gives nursery the opportunity to explore things that grow including animals, plants and foods. We will also be focusing on Mother’s Day and Easter in this half term.

Summer 1

Animal Adventures

The animal adventures allows us to cover so many different animals and their habitats! This will range from our household pets, to our local wildlife, farms, zoos and beyond!

Summer 2

Globe Trotters

Within this topic we can experience seaside and abroad holidays as well as different countries to the UK as we try a range of foods, explore activities and take part in some of the culture. As we are focusing on holidays we can look at different modes of transport and even take a dive under the sea!
